Isophthalic acid is an organic compound with the chemical formula C8H6O4. It is a white crystalline powder that is soluble in water, alcohols, and some organic solvents. Isophthalic acid is commonly used as a building block for the production of polyester resins, which are widely used in the manufacture of plastics, fibers, and coatings. It is also used as a precursor for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and various other chemicals. Isophthalic acid is considered relatively safe for human consumption and is used as a food additive as well. It has a melting point of 421 °C (790 °F) and a boiling point of 402 °C (756 °F).
